NORTHERN CAPE PROVINCIAL HERITAGE MONTH CELEBRATIONS

The Khoisan communities, !Xun and Khwe living at Platfontein outside Kimberley in the Northern Cape will be granted opportunity to showcase their rich cultural heritage during 2023 Northern Cape Provincial Heritage Day celebrations. The celebrations will be held at Platfontein Sports Ground on Monday 25 September 2023. The day will be celebrated under the theme “Celebrating our cultural diversity in a democratic South Africa”. The ceremony will be attended by MEC for Sport, Arts and Culture Ms. Desery Fienies together with other Members of Northern Cape Executive Council as well as leadership of both Sol Plaatje and Frances Baard Municipalities.

The 2023 Heritage Month brings focus to South Africa’s rich and diverse cultural heritage and its immense contribution to our social, economic, health, and scientific well-being especially for rural, township, and peri-urban communities.

Annually, September marks Heritage Month with Heritage Day celebrated on 24 September by showcasing our nation’s diverse culture and heritage. During Heritage Month, South Africans celebrate many diverse cultures and our rich heritage.

The Department of Sport, Arts and Culture through its Frances Baard District, will this year be partnering with Kgosi Galeshewe Athletics Club and Teemaneng Running Club to host Half Marathons.

The two races will serve as part of build-up activities to the provincial event while KGA Race is particularly in honor of the late anti-colonial revolutionary and Batlhaping Kgosi (Chief) Galeshewe.

The department will also make use of the month to unveil head stone monuments in honour of Jacky Greef and a popular Setswana Music Composer, Poet and Cultural activist Mohlwahatsi “Laaties” Keupilwe.

This year’s Heritage Month continues to encourage South Africans in all district municipalities to host cultural carnivals with music, dance, poetry, and food from different cultural groups who reside within that district.
