2018 NORTHERN CAPE PROVINCIAL YOUTH DAY CELEBRATIONS

The Northern Cape Provincial Government is set to honour a former youth leader, Casious Plaatjies during the 2018 Provincial Youth Day celebrations. The provincial government is scheduled to unveil a tombstone in honour of Plaatjies in Postmasburg on Saturday 16 June 2018. The unveiling will form part of the 2018 Youth Day celebrations which will be held at the Tsantsabane Show Ground later that day. The event will be commemorated under the theme "Live the legacy: Towards a socio-economically empowered youth”.

This year’s Youth Month takes place within the same year that South Africa marks the 100 years (Centenary) for both Nelson Mandela and Albertina Sisulu. The 2018 commemoration will be preceded by various programmes including sporting activities in and around Tsantsabane area. Government and its agencies such as the National Youth Development Agency will over the month host a number of engagements including youth expos, dialogues and youth entrepreneur hubs to showcase opportunities available to young people.

The youth day programme will be filled with fun and education where strategic government departments such as Health, Home Affairs, South African Social Security Agency, SASSA, Small Enterprise Development Agency, Seda will be on site to deliver government services to the youth. They will be joined by other sister departments which will be displaying career and study opportunities.

Every year on 16 June South Africa commemorates the 1976 Soweto uprising to pay tribute to learners who stood up against the apartheid government. They stood together and laid down their lives fighting for freedom and the right to equal education.

Observed as a public holiday, the day serves as a reminder that young people in the country were at the forefront of our struggle. It also provide us with an opportunity to take stock of the strides we have made in addressing issues facing the youth.

In South Africa we not only commemorate Youth Day but dedicate the entire month of June to the youth.

The media is hereby cordially invited to the commemoration to be held on the 16 June 2018 in Postmasburg. For more information please contact either Mr. Conrad Fortune @ 079 8730679 or Mr. Morapedi Sekhoane @ 078 944 0200
