The Department of Sport, Arts and Culture will take part in the National Big Walk and National Recreation Day events scheduled to be held in Kimberley in the Frances Baard District on Sunday 02 October and Friday 07 October 2022. These campaigns will be observed in all 9 nine provinces through partnerships with government departments as well as the private sector. The two initiatives will be led by MEC for Sport, Arts and Culture Ms. Desery Fienies and Head of Department Mr. Oupa Phiri.
The National Big Walk and Recreation Day events are initiatives of National Department of Sports and Recreation. They will be held for the first time physically this year following the easing of Covid-19 restrictions. The Big Walk is open to all citizens irrespective of age, gender, religion and origin. The walk which is scheduled to start and end at AR Abass Stadium will see five kilometer participants leaving the stadium into Stokross Street and turning left into St. Paul's Road, pass the swimming pool towards the traffic lights and turn left into Barkly Road before moving towards a finishing point at AR Abass Stadium. A ten kilometer walk will also follow a similar route two-fold.
While it holds similar objectives of encouraging a healthy lifestyle, public servants are encouraged to participate in the Recreation Day program which will be held at Diskobolos Army Base from 07:30 till 14:00 on the said date. The two events are promising exciting activities including, Tug of War, Aerobics, Soccer, Netball and Indigenous Games which patrons will get to enjoy.
The Kimberley community is encouraged to come out in their numbers and experience a family fun day of a different kind and entertainment with a healthy twist.
