The Northern Cape Department of Sport, Arts and Culture will commemorate the 2023 Africa Day through a multi-stakeholder partnership to end violence against women and children. The Department and stakeholders will kick-off the 2023 Africa Day commemorations by launching Orange Day Campaign at some of Kimberley's taxi ranks, schools and shopping malls on Thursday, 25 May 2023.
The campaign which will be led by MEC Ms. Desery Fienies will be used as an organising strategy to call for the prevention and elimination of violence against women and girls. MEC Fienies will be accompanied by the leadership of Sol Plaatje Local and Frances Baard District Municipalities and Sol Plaatje University amongst others.
The Orange Day Campaign is an international civil society led campaign that commences on the 25th every month each year. It was started by activists at the inaugural Women's Global Leadership Institute in 1991. It uses the colour orange to represent a bright future, free from violence against women and girls. This year's campaign coincides with Africa Day commemorations which will be marked under the theme "Deepening the AU Vision for Unity for Africa through prosperity, Peace and Modernity for better Africa and a better World."
MEC Fienies will as part of Africa Day's proceedings also deliver a keynote address at Sol Plaatje University before joining her departmental officials for an array of sporting activities, exhibitions and African cuisine tasting at AR Abass Stadium later in the day.
