The Northern Cape Provincial Government has honoured a former youth leader, Cassius Plaatjies during the 2018 Provincial Youth Day celebrations. The provincial government led by Premier Sylvia Lucas unveiled a tombstone in honour of Plaatjies in Postmasburg on Saturday 16 June 2018. The unveiling formed part of the 2018 Youth Day celebrations which was held at the Tsantsabane Show Ground. The event was commemorated under the theme "Live the legacy: Towards a socio-economically empowered youth”.
The 2018 Month takes place within the same year that South Africa marks the 100 years (Centenary) for both Nelson Mandela and Albertina Sisulu. The 2018 commemoration was preceded by various programmes including sporting activities in and around Tsantsabane area. Government and its agencies such as the National Youth Development Agency has over the month hosted a number of engagements including youth expos, dialogues and youth entrepreneur hubs to showcase opportunities available to young people.
The youth day programme was filled with fun and education where strategic government departments such as Home Affairs, South African Social Security Agency, SASSA, Small Enterprise Development Agency, Seda was on site to deliver government services to the youth.
Every year on 16 June South Africa commemorates the 1976 Soweto uprising to pay tribute to learners who stood up against the apartheid government. They stood together and laid down their lives fighting for freedom and the right to equal education.
