The MEC for Sport, Arts and Culture, Hon. Mangaliso Matika, held a courtesy and introductory meeting with the newly appointed Chinese Consul General, Mr. Ren Faqiang, on 13 April 2026. The meeting took place on the sidelines of the Northern Cape Investment and Jobs Summit hosted by the Premier.
MEC Matika welcomed Consul General Ren Faqiang and his delegation to the Northern Cape and expressed appreciation for the opportunity to engage on strengthening and building upon the existing collaboration between the province, the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture (DSAC), and the People’s Republic of China.
During the engagement, MEC Matika provided an overview of the Northern Cape, noting that the province continues to face the triple challenges of inequality, unemployment, and poverty. He emphasized the importance of strategic partnerships in addressing these socio-economic issues.
The MEC further highlighted the longstanding historical relationship between South Africa and the People’s Republic of China, acknowledging China’s significant contribution to the global ecosystem. He commended the progress made through existing collaborations and encouraged the Consul General to further cement relations by expanding support initiatives in partnership with the province and DSAC.
In response, Consul General Ren Faqiang welcomed the MEC’s remarks and reaffirmed China’s commitment to strengthening, consolidating, and expanding its relationship with South Africa. He highlighted the importance of continued collaboration, particularly in supporting development initiatives within the Northern Cape and DSAC.
The Consul General also underscored the strong bilateral ties between the two countries and emphasized the value of mutual learning through exchange programmes. Such initiatives, he noted, have the potential to enhance skills development, create employment opportunities, and contribute to building a more equitable society.
Both parties concluded the meeting by expressing a shared commitment to ongoing engagement and agreed on the importance of future meetings to further concretise support interventions and expand existing initiatives.
