Human Rights Day Media Statement 2023

TO ALL MEDIA/NEWS EDITORS

FRIDAY 17 MARCH 2023

PRESIDENT RAMAPHOSA TO LEAD NATIONAL COMMEMORATION OF HUMAN RIGHTS DAY

President Cyril Ramaphosa will on Tuesday, 21 March 2023, deliver the keynote address at the 2023 Human Rights Day commemoration to be held in De Aar, in the Northern Cape Province.

The theme for this first commemorative day on the annual national calendar is “Consolidating and Sustaining Human Rights Culture into the Future”.
The history of Human Rights Day is grounded in the Sharpeville Massacre that took place on the 21 of March 1960, where apartheid police killed 69 anti-apartheid protesters.

Human Rights Day also honours 35 people who were killed on 21 March 1985 when apartheid police targeted community members after a funeral at  Uitenhage/Langa.

As part of the democratic dispensation, South Africa observes March as Human Rights Month to promote respect for basic human rights for all and restore and uphold human dignity in line with the Bill of Rights.
This period also honours those who fought for liberation, and celebrates the many rights guaranteed under the Constitution, and which are the basis for building a united and inclusive, non-racial, non-sexist and prosperous society.
Government, social partners and constitutional institutions such as the South African Human Rights Commission are guided by the National Action Plan to Combat Racism, Racial Discrimination, Xenophobia and Related Intolerance.
The National Action Plan provides the basis for raising awareness of anti-racism, equality and anti-discrimination issues and developing collective responses.

De Aar in the Northern Cape has been selected as the site for the national Human Rights Day commemoration as part of government’s rotation of national days that ensures that communities in all provinces are able to be part of such occasions.

The Human Rights Day event will take place as follows:
Date:            Tuesday, 21 March 2023
Time:            11h00
Venue:          De Aar West Stadium, Northern Cape

MESSAGE OF CONDOLENCES AND TRIBUTE TO THE “MOTHER OF AZANIA “ MA ZONDENI VERONICA SOBUKWE FROM THE MEC OF SPORT ARTS AND CULTURE MS BONGIWE MBINQO-GIGABA

The MEC for Sport , Arts and Culture Ms Bongiwe Mbinqo-Gigaba would hereby like to take this opportunity to convey her deepest sympathy and condolences to the Sobukwe family on the passing of Ms Zondeni Veronica Sobukwe, the wife to the PAC founder the late Professor Mangaliso Robert Sobukwe. Like many of her peers who were affected by the socio-political impact and planning patterns of the apartheid regime, Ma Sobukwe sacrificed her time, leisure and family in the fight against apartheid.

Ma Zondeni Veronica Sobukwe played an indelible role in both the liberation and development of our country and to her and her generation we owe an immeasurable debt of gratitude. She leaves behind a proud legacy of steadfastness, resilience and selflessness for her exceptional and outstanding contribution and sacrifice to the liberation struggle.
Her legacy is engraved in the minds and societal fibre of our people and our nation which she served tirelessly and passionately.
Her deep understanding of the plight of the poor and her unwavering desire to play a role in achieving an equal society and eliminating poverty will be sorely missed by those who have worked with her. She will be remembered for her tireless contribution in the fight against apartheid , her unwavering determination to serve her people and her commitment to the prosperity of our nation , and will be sorely missed. At this hour of great loss, our thoughts are with her family, friends, comrades and the entire PAC family and all those who have been touched by her life.

The Sobukwe family has a strong footprint in the Province as Professor Robert Mangiliso Sobukwe and his family with Ma Zondeni Sobukwe was banished to Kimberley in 1969 and restricted to the confines of Galeshewe by the apartheid government in their attempt to suppress and frustrate him in his drive to fight apartheid and ensure the emancipation of the majority black South Africans. They owned a house in Naledi Street Galeshewe as well as a law office at the Mayibuye Precinct until his death 40 years ago on the 27 February 1978.

The MEC for Sport , Arts and Culture Ms Bongiwe Mbinqo-Gigaba will be therefore visiting the bereaved Sobukwe Family on Tuesday, 21st August 2018 at 11h00 in Graaf Reinet to pay her respect to the family and all those close to Ma Sobukwe.
