MEDIA ADVISORY TO ALL JOURNALISTS AND NEWS EDITORS CONSULTATIVE WORKSHOP ON A DRAFT POLICY ON WOMEN IN SPORT05 OCTOBER 2023

The Northern Cape Department of Sport, Arts and Culture together with its National counterpart will be conducting a consultative workshop on a draft Policy on Women in Sport. The consultative work will be conducted Wednesday, 11 October 2023 at McGregor Museum in Kimberley in the Frances Baard District. Its intended to solicit inputs from various stakeholders in the sports and recreation landscape with the ultimate goal of promoting gender equality.

The draft Women in Sport Policy has been developed to redress existing inequalities for girls and women in the South African sport ecosystem across eight strategic priorities, namely: (i) participation and excellence; (ii) coaching, officiating and support; (iii) leadership and governance; (iv) visibility, framing and advocacy; (v) safeguarding and integrity; (vi) sport for development; (vii) Team SA delivery and (viii) hosting sporting events.

The policy aims to promote gender equality (resource input level) and equity (outcomes) associated with gender parity and gender mainstreaming, in alignment with global trends and expression of the South African Government’s commitment to signed declarations and national priorities. It also features issues of safeguarding to protect girls and women from all forms of abuse and discrimination in sport settings. The Women in Sport policy identifies and addresses multiple challenges facing women and girls in different ways, as many face multiple barriers and present different layers of vulnerability and marginalization associated with gender, race, disability, age, religion, culture, geographical location, and sexual orientation, inclusive of those belonging to the LGBTQI+ population, transgender women and women with differences of sex development (DSD).

The policy was taken through various consultative sessions in the form of roadshows which were led by the former Minister of Sport and Recreation and lately by the Deputy Minister of the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture. It was presented to Cabinet in March 2023 for approval purposes. It was gazetted in June 2023 where inputs were received and incorporated into the draft document.

The purpose of the Kimberley workshop is to finalize costing and implementation plans. Members of the media are therefore cordially invited to provide coverage to the workshop and to also nominate a representative/s who can stay throughout the session and make meaningful inputs into the draft policy.
