MEDIA STATEMENT 03 August 2023 WOMEN’S MONTH 2023

Northern Cape Provincial Government will commemorate the 2023 Provincial Women’s Day at Port Nolloth Sport Stadium in the Richtersveld Local Municipality in Namakwa District. As part of redressing socio-economic empowerment of women, the Provincial Government will hand out business startup packages to two hundred women owned enterprises from across Namakwa District. The commemoration will be led by Premier Dr. Zamani Saul together with the MEC for Sport, Arts and Culture Ms. Desery Fienies as well as the MEC for Youth, Women, persons with Disabilities, Communications and E-Governance Ms. Venus Blennies. They will be accompanied by other Members of Executive Council, Executive Mayor of Namakwa District and the local leadership of Richtersveld and Namakwa Municipalities.

Each year, in August, South Africa marks Women’s Month, when tribute is paid to more than 20 000 women who marched to the Union Buildings on 9 August 1956 in protest against Pass Laws.

This year marks 67 years since the watershed 1956 women’s march which was one of the largest demonstrations staged in the country’s history. It was underpinned by the adoption of the Women’s Charter of 1954.

Women’s Month 2023 will be commemorated under the overarching theme: “Accelerating socio-economic opportunities for empowerment of women.”  While South Africa has made numerous strides in helping advance women’s empowerment, however, their full potential in society is still to be realized.

The reality is that gender inequality still persists with more women than men mired in poverty and unemployment. The month will focus on interventions across government, civil society and the private sector to develop women in our nation.

Citizens from the district are encouraged to take advantage of all embracing Government Services Fair programme where various government departments and other stakeholders will showcase and deliver empowerment opportunities for women.

MEC for Sport, Arts and Culture Ms. Desery Fienies will hand over art equipment to a number of identified Community Arts Centres. The Department will also roll out a variety of recreational, cultural, libraries and heritage programmes as a build up towards Women’s Day.

And so will many other departments engage in a variety of activities and projects that seek to empower women, girls, Disabled persons and the Elderly throughout the Month of August.

Women from all walks of life are encouraged to take part in these activities and ensure that they benefit a great deal from all the services that government will render.
