The month of August in South Africa is dedicated to the commemoration of 1956 Women’s March. The iconic march saw 20 000 women march to the Union Buildings to protest against the discriminatory pass laws. This march has been celebrated since 1995 as Women’s Day to recognize the important role played by women during the struggle for liberation against colonisation and apartheid.
This year’s annual commemoration coincides with the country’s celebration of 25 Years of Freedom and Democracy. Furthermore, this Women’s Month takes place alongside the 65th anniversary of the Founding Conference of the Federation of South African Women which adopted the 1954 Women’s Charter. The charter called for a society where “women do not form a society separate from the men and therefore share in the problems and anxieties of men and join hands with to remove social evils and obstacles to progress.

The Department of Sport, Arts and Culture will host a dialogue between professional women and grade 12 learners at Kalahari Museum in Upington.
