The Northern Cape Premier Dr. Zamani Saul is set to deliver the keynote address during the 2019 Provincial Youth Day commemoration at Die Kraal Stadium in Calvinia on Sunday, 16 June 2019. Premier Saul will be accompanied by the MEC for Sport, Arts and Culture Ms. Bernice Sinxeve, Members of his Executive Council and the Mayors of the Local and District Municipality of the Namakwa Region . The commemoration will be marked under the theme "25 Years of Democracy: A celebration of youth activism"".
The 2019 commemoration will be preceded by various programmes including sporting activities and dialogues amongst others. Premier Saul will engage with young parents at Niewoudtville Sports Hall on Sunday, 16 June 2019. The engagement will be aimed at addressing issues of teenage pregnancies and outlining available government opportunities for the youths.
Government and its agencies such as the National Youth Development Agency will over the month host a number of engagements including youth expos, dialogues and youth entrepreneur hubs to showcase opportunities available to young people.
Every year on 16 June South Africa commemorates the 1976 Soweto uprising to pay tribute to learners who stood up against the apartheid government. Observed as a public holiday, the day serves as a reminder that young people in the country were at the forefront of our struggle. It also provides us with an opportunity to take stock of strides we have made in addressing issues facing the youth.
This year’s Youth Month coincides with the commemoration of 25 years of Freedom and Democracy. It also comes less than a month since President Cyril Ramaphosa was sworn in as President of the Republic of South Africa.
In South Africa we not only commemorate Youth Day but dedicate the entire month of June to the youth.
