The MEC for Sport, Arts and Culture Ms Bongiwe Mbinqo-Gigaba will be embarking on an intensive three day outreach program in Greenpoint in the Frances Baard District from Friday, 31st August up to Sunday 02 September 2018.
The outreach program forms part of our mandate to promote social cohesion and nation building and to ensure that the services of the department are extended to the Greenpoint Community. The program also forms part of the closure of 2018 Women’s Month.
Taking into account the socio-historical background of Greenpoint and relating to August 9 and women’s struggle heritage, the activities are directed towards paying tribute to those whose struggles have laid a foundation for women’s rights and freedom today. It is also intended to inspire action and to further transform gender relations and advance efforts to ensure gender equality and women’s empowerment in South Africa.
The area has produced political leaders who have fought for the liberation of the people of South Africa. They include the likes of Ma Frances Baardt who was actively involved in the drafting of the Freedom Charter and who is one of the leaders of the historic march of women to the Union Buildings on 09th August 1956 to protest against pass laws, the first elected democratic Premier of the Northern Cape, Mr. Manne Dipico as well as Dr. Athur Letele who fought for proper health care and equal rights during apartheid.
Women have historically helped build resilient communities and the event too is to honour, entertain and celebrate the women of Greenpoint as pillars of strength in their community. The outreach programme will start off with a health walk from the Diamond Pavilion Mall to Greenpoint where it will be followed by aerobics session at Greenpoint Park. The department will also be handing over sporting equipment to both Greenpoint High and Primary Schools. We have furthermore partnered with Shoprite which will be distributing soup to the local community members.
The MEC will be ending off the day by delivering the keynote address at the Women in Leadership Dinner to be held at the Sol Plaatje University at 17h30.
There will be an opportunity for photographs and interviews. Full schedule of events included below.
