Under the Departments motto, "A child in sport is a child out of court" MEC for Sport, Arts and Culture Ms. Bongiwe Mbinqo-Gigaba alongside Premier Sylvia Lucas opened a Multi-purpose Sport Facility in Carolusberg, a small town near Springbok in the Namaqua District on Wednesday 17 April 2019. The versatile sporting field serves to cater for four sporting codes namely, netball, tennis, volley ball and basket ball.
Community members and local schools in the surrounding areas came in numbers to receive their long awaited facility. The Premier expressed how government does not only base importance on education, but in sports as well. “We must encourage our children to participate in various sporting activities which will aid in their health and well-being”. She went further to define sport as an important social asset that can open many doors of learners when assertive and determined. “Participating in sport can not only keep you healthy and fit, but can also improve a child’s cooperation skills and a great boost of self confidence hence it is important that we nurture our children in sport while they are still young” said Lucas.
As a token of government's unwavering support, Premier Sylvia Lucas and MEC Bongiwe Mbinqo-Gigaba awarded the Namakwa School District R15 000 and new sporting equipment. Learners from Izak Van Niekerk, St Cyprians Primary, Sacred Heart Primary, Concordia Primary and Carolusberg Intermediate were counted amongst the beneficiaries of the new facility and equipment.
Learners couldn’t contain their excitement as they started playing in the new facility as soon as the premier had cut the ribbon. MEC Mbinqo-Gigaba and Premier Lucas also took to the facility to display some of their skills alongside the young ones.
