The Department of Sport, Arts and Culture through the Heritage Services Unit, together with the DSAC John Taolo Gaetsewe District Office and in collaboration with district stakeholders, will host the Langeberg War Heritage Educational Tour as part of the 2026 Youth Month build-up programme.
The programme aims to promote heritage awareness amongst young people, with specific focus on the Langeberg War of 1897, one of the most historically significant wars of resistance against colonialism and land invasion in the Northern Cape.
This year’s tour will focus on educating young people, community members and hiking enthusiasts about the historical significance of the Langeberg area. The event seeks to honour heroes and heroines who contributed to the region’s history while promoting cultural preservation, environmental care and active learning through guided tours and hiking activities.
Programme objectives include:
• To commemorate and honour historical figures associated with the Langeberg area
• To educate participants about local heritage sites and their significance
• To promote preservation through cleaning and maintenance of monuments and grave sites
• To encourage youth participation in heritage and outdoor activities
• To foster community unity through shared cultural experiences
