The MEC for Sport, Arts and Culture Ms. Desery Fienies together with Head of Department Mr. Oupa Phiri have planted citrus tree and Nelson Mandela rose at the Mayibuye Multi-Purpose Centre at Galeshewe today. The initiative comes as part of departmental Nelson Mandela International Day commemorations. The celebrations started with DSAC officials cleaning the iconic facility which is found in the heart of Galeshewe township.
The facility requires massive revamp towards enhancing its outlook and needs to be prioritized given the fact that it is the most active and visited centre in the township. It provides access to event hosting through its conference facilities, accommodates music and dance academies and a state of the art sport facility as well as offices.
This year’s Nelson Mandela International Day is celebrated under the global theme: “Do what you can, with what you have, wherever you are.” It is a clarion call for people to support and participate in the campaign by bringing about sustainable interventions with lasting impact.
The planting of a citrus tree and Nelson Mandela rose at the centre responds to this year's focus of encouraging people to promote community and backyard gardens, supporting fruit and indigenous tree planting, and creating awareness of the intersections between food security and climate change.
