The Northern Cape Department of Sport, Arts and Culture hosted the seventh annual Big Walk on Sunday, 07 October 2018. The event was held at AR Abass Stadium in Kimberley in the Frances Baard District.
The Big Walk which started in 2012, is an initiative of the National Sport and Recreation Department. The event comprised of two walks over a distance of five and ten kilometers each. The registration process began at 06H00 in the morning at the stadium for both ten and five kilometer walks.
The five kilometer walk started from the stadium and commenced through Stok Roos Street into St Pauls Road and turned into Barkly and Pniel Road, short left into Madilief Laan, short left into Aster Road and finished at AR Abass Stadium. Meanwhile the ten kilometer route started at the stadium down Stok Roos Street into St Pauls Road and crossed over the robot into Sechoareng, followed in the Sechoareng route until the robots and turned left into Hulana Street. The route continued straight and turned right at the old Ekhaya guest house into Morgan Street, then left at the robot into Royal Street down into Galeshewe Road and straight down up to the old Lyric cinema three way stop short left into Pniel Road, short right into Madilief, it then followed Madelief up to Petunia Road and at the three way turned left into Stok Roos Street to finish at the stadium.
The completion of both walks was around 10H00 after which provision was made to introduce a variety of activities aimed at promoting healthy lifestyles and genuine family fun. Activities included soccer, exhibitions, tag of war, mass aerobics and dribble it out amongst others.
